Ben thought about what Erica had said about Atlas missing his fellow K-9s. Should he look into a trainer and see if Attie could be of training help? But then Ben would need to be there, too, and daytime wouldn’t work for Jason. Ben didn’t want to leave his son hanging, or miss out on the work. He rather enjoyed it. Still, he needed to do more for his retired partner than simply play fetch.

By the time they reached the Ferris wheel, Ben still hadn’t let go of Erica’s hand. He wasn’t sure what had prompted him to reach for her, but once he’d made that connection, he didn’t want to let go. He was surprised and more than a little pleased that Erica hadn’t let go, either.

Being around Erica these last couple of weeks had brought him out of the daze he’d been in for a good portion of the year. Lori leaving him had been a kick in the gut he hadn’t expected. These past seven months, Ben had wallowed about how he’d failed at marriage. It hurt, sure, but he was beginning to think his pride had been wounded worse than his heart. He’d locked up that part of him tight a long time ago.

Erica had experienced her share of grief and sorrow, yet she’d kept a sunny demeanor. She hadn’t folded in on herself; instead, she’d found a strong faith in God. He’d go to Erica’s church and check it out. Maybe there was something there for him. Something that might heal the old wounds and the new one his divorce had opened.

They were up next in the Ferris-wheel line, so Ben waited while the ride attendant lifted the bar to their little passenger pod. He let Erica climb in first, then sat next to her. There wasn’t much leg room, so he had to turn a little in the seat to fit. He didn’t mind; it gave him a better view of Erica’s face. She didn’t seem to mind his knees nearly knocking into hers. The attendant replaced the bar, and the pod swung back and forth as the ride moved forward.

“This is fun,” Erica said with a smile.

She looked beautiful with her hair down. The soft breeze tousled her brown locks, making him itch to run his fingers through those loose waves. He rested his arm along the back of their seat instead.

The ride stopped, leaving them swinging gently as the next pod was loaded. It made him chuckle. “I haven’t been on one of these in ages.”

“Remember when we used to come here as kids?” Erica asked.

“Of course, I do. You loved the swings and the Ferris wheel, but never the Tilt-A-Whirl.”

“Because you cranked the wheel way too hard. It made me sick to my stomach.”

Ben laughed. “That was the whole point.”

“To get me sick? Nice.” But she laughed at the memory, too, and then looked thoughtful. “Thanks for inviting me.”

“Thanks for coming.” Ben turned a little more, so he could face her.
